Pakistani terrorist Kasab started singing

Ajmal Amir Kasab (21), the terrorist arrested by the Mumbai Police, has started singing. He has told investigators that dreaded Lashkar-e-Tayyeba (LeT) commander Mohammed Muzzamil, who is known by aliases such as Yusuf and Abu Gurera, controlled the entire operation, codenamed “Operation VTS”, to attack Mumbai.

Kasab, who was made to listen to intercepted telephone conversations, has identified the voice of Muzzamil. Police sources said the terrorists, who had entered the city with five prepaid SIM cards, were in constant touch with Muzzamil, who kept barking out orders through the operation.

Two of the five SIM cards have been traced to Delhi, while the remaining three were brought from Kolkata. “They were procured on the basis of bogus documents and were smuggled to Pakistan,” said an investigator.

He also told investigators that LeT commander Zakir-ur-Rehman Lakhvi had promised his poor family in Faridkot a large sum of money in return for his participation in the attack on Mumbai. According to police sources, Muzzamil had called the terrorists holed up at the Taj Mahal Palace & Tower, Oberoi Trident and Nariman House using a voice over Internet protocol (VOIP) telephone. The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has helped investigators track the VOIP telephone to a computer in Lahore.

Kasab has told interrogators about the various Lashkar camps that he has attended since 2007. He has also told investigators about Lashkar's base camp where Jamaat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Mohammed Sayyed and others deliver fiery speeches to motivate the cadre. Ajmal also disclosed to investigators the inflammatory films that were shown to brainwash Lashkar recruits.

According to police sources, Kasab revealed that LeT conducts regular training camps at Danna, Abdul-Bin-Masud, Mangla Dam and Um-Al-Qura camps in Muzaffarabad and Badli in Kotli. He has also disclosed that LeT has opened two new camps for handpicked cadre to train for suicide missions at Akas in Muzafarabad and another camp in an area known as “Point”.

He also told investigators that LeT commander Zakir-ur-Rehman Lakhvi had promised his poor family in Faridkot a large sum of money in return for his participation in the attack on Mumbai.

Based on Kasab’s revelations, the Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police is preparing a dossier on the banned terror outfit, which will be handed over to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the National Security Advisor and the FBI.

The dossier will also be handed over to the Pakistan government, which has been seeking evidence against LeT from the Indian government. Deven Bharti, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime), confirmed that a dossier on the entire operation was being prepared.

Meanwhile, investigators are examining the Garmin GPS and walkie-talkie set used by the terrorists to track the exact route the terrorists took to enter Mumbai from Karachi.

Is it harder than killing a poor lady and throwing her body into the well?

Abhaya case: Accused moves Kerala HC

Kochi (PTI): Father Jose Puthrikayil, arrested in the sister Abhaya murder case, on Friday filed a petition in the Kerala High Court seeking to quash the order of a chief judicial magistrate remanding him to 14 days' CBI custody.

Continuous detention of any person, especially a priest for 14 days at a stretch is "illegal, inhuman and hard", Puthrikayil, second accused in the case, stated in the petition.

He said that the CBI has not narrated the prior history of investigation and likelihood of further charges which it expects to derive from the accused. The investigating agency is bound to narrate the above aspects in an affidavit, he stated.

The remand report was also silent about the involvement of him and evidence so far collected, the petitioner said.

The petitioner also complained that before being produced in court, he was in custody for over 30 hours and the CBI had not showed the courtesy to explain the delay in producing before court.

The petition is likely to come up for hearing on November 24.

Puthrikayil was arrested along with Father Thomas Kottur and Sister Sephi in connection with the murder of Sister Abahya, a nun of the St Pius convent on March 27, 1992. The three were arrested on Wednesday.

Human rights activist and Abhaya Action Council convener Jomon Puthenpurakkal, who had pursued the case through various courts and investigating agencies, on Wednesday alleged that Kerala Congress (M) chairman and former Minister KM Mani had interfered in the case pertaining to Sr Abhaya’s murder several times, but Mani responded saying the allegation was baseless.

“Mani had wanted the case not to come to its conclusion. The intention of Mani’s visits to Delhi at all crucial junctures in the case was suspicious. What Mani told me when we met in Delhi had also increased my doubts,” Jomon told newsmen at a Press meet held after the CBI confirmed the arrest of two priests and a nun in the Sr Abhaya murder case.

Jomon said that Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil had interfered in the final phase of the investigation into the case and this had led the probe into a hard wall. But the measures taken by the CBI were generating hopes, he said. “I am happy that my legal battle for years has not gone waste,” Jomon said.

He demanded stringent action against the police officials who had tried to sabotage the probe and to destroy evidences. He said probe should be held into the actions taken by KT Michael of the State police Crime Branch, who had first investigated the Abhaya case.

“The CBI has now regained its credibility by arresting the two priests and the nun. I am also happy that the truth is coming out at last though (vested interests) crores of rupees have been spent to bury it forever. You can never conceal truth. Also they (the vested interests) can buy anyone but me,” he said.

Terming the the allegation levelled against him by Jomon Puthenpurakkal as baseless, KM Mani said that he had never attempted to do anything illegal. Justice V Ramkumar of the Kerala High Court, who was handling the Abhaya case, had in August last ordered that the rights activist should not get involved in the case anymore. The judge had stirred a hornets’ nest by saying that Jomon was filing pubic interest litigations for fame.

The judge also ordered a thorough enquiry against the action council convener who had worked tireless for the last 16 years to pursue the case. The court asked the Kerala Government to carry out an exclusive probe based on 24 questions the court suggested. These questions included those about his sources of income, his relations with lawyers, his connections with people outside.

Despite sharp protests from several quarters, the Government constituted a special team of officials for the probe against Jomon. Assembly Speaker K Radhakrishnan ordered that Jomon should not enter the MLA Hostel in Thiruvananthapuram. However, the Supreme Court, accepting the appeal filed by him, imposed a stay on all such inquiries.

At the same time, Varghese P Thomas former DySP of the CBI, who resigned from service out of frustration in his inability to proceed with the investigation into the Sr Abhaya murder case, said V Thygarajan, SP of CBI, should be subjected to thorough investigations. He said those who had connived with others in destroying evidences were also guilty of the crime, he pointed out.

Thomas was the first CBI official to investigate the nun’s murder, and he had to resign following pressure to distort the probe when seven years of service was left. He had earlier alleged that Thyagarajan had asked him to report that Abhaya had committed suicide. Thomas also alleged that the Crime Branch, which had concluded that Abhaya had committed suicide, had burned all the evidences they had to avoid handing them over to the CBI.

Meanwhile, the CBI headquarters in Delhi claimed that the investigations into the Abhaya murder would be completed as early as possible as per the instructions given by the Kerala HC. A CBI spokesman at a Press conference in Delhi confirmed the arrest of two priests and a nun in relation to the case.

It happens only in India
02/11/2008 10:26:06 Courtesy: http://medsyn.blogspot.com/2008/11/it-happens-only-in-india.html

(English translation of the article written by Kannada writer S. L. Byrappa on religious conversions. The article is translated by Shri. Manoj Deshpande)

For the last four decades, Christian missionaries in India have been indulging in religious conversions and this trend has become fairly aggressive and far more pronounced with Sonia Gandhi’s coronation. However, the mass media have chosen to ignore reporting this. States like Orissa and Karnataka have reacted sharply to the scale of operations of Christian missionaries. This has been dutifully reported by all newspapers and TV channels across India. Self-proclaimed ‘Secularists’ and Left parties have taken this opportunity to announce that India has met its doom in this backlash and have thereby supported the missionaries! It is certainly a pity that they do not care to recognise that the common man on the street clearly understands what the truth is. Sonia Gandhi’s sycophants, self-proclaimed intellectuals and secularists have gone to the extent of blaming pro-Hindu organisations, Seers and BJP governments for the situation and are helping Christian organisations bent on getting India censured at the international level by United Nations and other such organisations. The Congress Government at the centre controlled by Sonia Gandhi has initiated steps to dismiss the state governments in Orissa and Karnataka. The only thing hat has stopped them is perhaps the realisation that these governments may be reinstated by popular vote which will not serve their purpose. In order to be seen as taking action the Government at the Centre and Left parties, aided by the English media, are blaming Bajrang Dal for the riots. However, no one has bothered to investigate if Bajrang Dal is really involved in these riots and whether how many of these riots are being instigated in the name of Bajrang Dal. Have they concerned themselves with finding out if these riots could have been caused by the neighbours or communities of those who have converted due to the temptations and misinformation campaign induced by the missionaries?

Francois Gautier, a French Journalist residing in India has expressed concern over he conversions that are taking place in India with the tacit support of Sonia Gandhi. He says: “I am a Christian by birth and a Westerner by origin. I have studied mostly in Catholic schools. My Uncle Hugh Gautier, who was one of the noblest men I knew, was a priest in a beautiful church in Paris. My father, who was a famous artist in France, lived his entire life as a devout Catholic. They were regular visitors to the Church. Having come from this background, I get disturbed when I notice the extent to which Christianity is spreading across India under Sonia Gandhi’s rule. According to Census 2001, there are 23.4 Lac Christians in India, which amounts to about 2.5%, and that is fairly negligible. However, India today has Christian Chief Ministers in five states: Nagaland, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Kerala and Andhra Pradesh. Most politicians in Sonia Gandhi’s inner circle are either Christians or Muslims. It seems like she doe not trust Hindus. Ambika Soni, a Christian, is Congress’ General Secretary and a powerful member of Sonia’s coterie. Oscar Fernandes is a minister who implements Centre’s policies. Margaret Alva is entrusted with motivating Maharashtra Congress with fear. Congress in Karnataka is virtually A K Antony’s domain and Sonia’s secretaries belong to various Christian organisations in India. Walson Thampu, a known anti-Hindu, is the head of NCERT’s (National Council for Educational Research and Training) Educational Committee. Sonia Gandhi nominated a known Hindu-baiter, John Dayal, to her National Integration Committee. Another anti-Hindu, Kancha Elliah, has implicit approval of the Government to plead to UN & US Congress to look into matters related to caste discrimination in India. I have nothing personal against Sonia Gandhi. However, it is disconcerting to note that the number of conversions have increased exponentially since she has assumed the top-post in India. Approximately four thousand foreign Christian missionaries are actively converting people to Christianity in various states in India today. At the time of independence there were no Christians in Tripura; today, their numbers stand at 1.2 Lacs. Their numbers have risen by 90% since 1991. This is more pronounced in Arunachal Pradesh: it had 1770 Christians in 1921 as opposed to 12 Lacs today. Moreover, there are 780 churches there. A church is built almost every day in the remotest parts of Andhra Pradesh, apart from the plan to build a church at Tirupati. Mizo, Bodo and other such rebellions in the North-eastern states are actively fuelled by Christian missionaries. More than twenty thousand people have lost their lives in the last two decades due to these movements in Assam and Manipur. State-owned Indian Airlines deplaned Swami Avimuktananda for carrying a stick – a symbol of his renunciation. It was just a harmless piece of bamboo. This could only happen in a weak state like India where a foreigner like Sonia Gandhi has been allowed to rule.” (Francois Gautier: http://www.francoisgautier.com/ 09343538419/09442123255)

The Indian media, especially English TV channels and newspapers celebrated The Pope’s visit to India. The Indian Government accorded hospitality reserved for heads of states to The Pope, who is the religious head of Roman Catholics. The President, The Prime Minister and the cabinet queued up to pay obeisance to him. A few pro-Hindu organisations argued that he is a religious head and his sole mission to India was to encourage conversions and therefore he should neither be allowed to enter India nor be accorded official welcome. These opinions were dismissed as Hindu-fundamentalist diatribes by the self-proclaimed modernists and the English media. And what did the Pope do? He proclaimed with exaltation: “Just as we planted the cross in Europe in the first millennium and in the Americas and Africa in the second millennium, we shall harvest the crop of our faith in this powerful continent (Asia) in the third millennium”. He did not bother to hide his true intentions. However, the media and the self-proclaimed Secularists who branded Hindu groups as fundamentalists chose to maintain clever silence over this proclamation.

The following list details the present population (percentage) of Christians (in countries that had previously been untouched by Christianity) due to the wide-spread activity of Christian missionaries: Angola (90%), Burundi (78%), Cameroon (35%), Central African Republic (82%), Chad (33%), Congo (62%), East Timor (98%), Ethiopia (52%), Equatorial Guinea (94%), Gabon (79%), Kenya (25%), Liberia (68%), Mozambique (31%), Nigeria (52%), Papua New Guinea (97%), Philippines (84%), Rwanda (69%), South Africa (78%), South Korea (49%), Sudan (30%), Tanzania (20%), Togo (23%), Uganda (70%) and Zaire (90%).

The USA contributes USD 145 Billion every year to fund Christian Missionaries across the world. Churches across the world spend USD 1.1 Billion towards research aimed at achieving religious conversions. This is for propaganda material in 300 languages about 180 topics. Books and articles are printed in 500 languages. They total 175000. Every conversion costs USD 3300. It does not mean that this amount reaches the Convert. It is the expense incurred in activities related to administration, planning and implementation of the conversion programme. In 1500 A.D, there were 30 Lac active Christian Missionaries. Their number stands at 64.8 Crore today. 54% of these people are non-Whites. The strategy is to train non-Whites, provide them with funds and involve them in religious conversions. This is similar to the time when the British employed Indians as Soldiers to rule India!

What brand of spiritual enlightenment is this? This is an issue that Indians do not understand. That is perhaps because Indians relate spiritual enlightenment to things like living in a hermitage in a forest or in caves in mountains or perhaps in the freezing heights of Snowy Himalayas where people manage to look inward. One cannot preach others until one is enlightened. And what would one preach about? To look inward! To understand oneself! Religion is a form of this enlightenment. Preaching it is called jigyasa. However, this isn’t the essence or method of Christianity.

To understand Christianity, we need to learn the features of Semitic religions. They are also called Prophetic religions. It means that these religions were established by a prophet each. The roots lie in the Jewish religion established by Prophet Abraham. Christianity, established by Jesus Christ, is a modified form of Judaism. Later, Prophet Mohammed established Islam borrowing various tenets of Abraham’s Judaism. The message common to these religions is that ‘God is not directly accessible to Man. You are, fundamentally, Sinners. God is exceptionally terrible and cruel and punishes without qualms. You will have to believe me, your Messiah, and follow my preaching to obtain an opportunity to avoid burning in hell. If you do not pay heed, you are sure to end up in hell. You will have to place faith in this religion. You will have to convert others to this faith. You will have to spread this message and convert people wherever you go, even if it necessitates the use of force. That is Religion; that is the code.’ Prophet Mohammed taught methods of torturing, killing and enslaving those who did not believe in Islam. These teachings are an integral part of Quran and have been highlighted in several places in the text. Prophets are intolerant towards Gods of other religions. I have described this is my novel AvaraNa.

Jesus Christ was one such Prophet. However, it is believed that he taught love and tolerance of a different variety as compared to the one preached by Prophet Abraham. Some Researchers wonder if Christ ever existed; and if he did exist, was he the kind of person depicted in the New Testament of the Bible? This view has found support after the discovery of Dead Sea Scrolls. Saint Paul, the founder of the Christian Church was the one who gave Christianity its present form. In one aspect, the Bible does not differ from the Quran: both propagate the view that if you do not abide by the Holy Scripture, you are destined to be consigned to the flames of hell. Christians (erroneously) believed that Jews had crucified Jesus and subsequently went on to torture and convert them, and those who refused to convert were tortured to the extreme. That is perhaps why Jews have refrained from converting others. Further, Jews have always been victims of torture and still do endure harassment in several parts of the world. Pope Pius XII knew that Hitler was executing Jews in Gas chambers. Hitler executed 60 Lac Jews in all. Pope Pius XII was notoriously known as Hitler’s Pope since he maintained studied silence over Hitler’s activities. He could have advised Hitler and perhaps reduced the number of people murdered during Hitler’s rule. It is widely believed that the Pope saw this as a sort of vengeance towards the people who crucified Jesus Christ. Christians have not been able to provide a suitable explanation to Pope’s behaviour during Holocaust.

The notorious Goa Inquisition (257 years between 1560 and 1817; 230 pages) conducted by the Portuguese Clergymen documents the persecution of those who refused to convert. The inquisitions presided by Joseph Stalin were modelled on Christ’s Inquisition. The Goa Inquisition was conducted behind closed doors in a big house in Goa. The priests subjected such men, women and children to torture with the belief that those who do not believe in Jesus must be under the influence of the Devil and therefore must be brought to faith by punishment. The screams of the victims used to echo in the vicinity deep into the night when they were whipped, their limbs ripped, and their eyelids were torn and their bodies were violated in the presence of members of their family.

Diego de Bordeaux, a priest and Miguel Vaz, the ruler of the territory had drafted a 41 point plan to torture Hindus into conversion. Under this plan, the then Viceroy of Goa, Antonio de Noronha released a directive to the province of Goa in 1566 that ordered: “ I hereby order that under the rule of my Monarch, no new Hindu temple shall be allowed to be constructed or repaired, in this province. Permission has to be sought to repair existing temples and the violation of this order will result in the destruction of the temple in case and the material inside such temples shall be confiscated”.

Other examples of his ordinances: Hindus shall not play musical instruments in their wedding ceremonies. Relatives shall not be invited for engagement. People shall not receive auspicious returns in weddings. There was a blanket ban on following rituals related to weddings, funerals, wearing traditional attire, growing revered herbs like Tulsi and following rituals related to penance and fasting. On September 22, 1570, an ordinance was issued that gave Hindus who converted to Christianity relief from paying taxes for a period of 15 years. They were required to stop using their Hindu names and family names. The Goa Inquisition would fill up several pages. Readers may refer to A K Priolkar’s THE GOA INQUISITION (Voice of India. New Delhi). Pages 79-84 of his book provide a full account of the Hindu temples destroyed by Missionaries with details of the places these temples belonged to. The book also contains a reference section with accounts by Portuguese authors of those times who have recorded these details. There is no difference between the Christian Missionaries and Muslim Kings who tortured Hindus and destroyed Hindu temples in response to those who refused to convert. Millions of Hindus in Goa fled to neighbouring states like Karnataka, Maharashtra and Kerala due to the lack of religious freedom. They call themselves Konkani Hindus. Chief among them were the GSBs (Gaud Saraswat Brahmins) and Saraswats.

Renowned Historian K M Panicker states thus in the twelfth chapter (PORTUGUESE RELIGIOUS POLICY IN MALABAR) of his book MALABAR AND THE PORTUGUESE (Voice of India, New Delhi, 1997- Reprint): The Rulers of Malabar never interfered in the ways of life of the Syrian Christians. This has been recorded by the Portuguese themselves. However, at the first available opportunity the Indian Syrian Christians proclaimed their loyalty to the King of Portugal. They submitted their ancient manuscripts and religious artefacts to Vasco de Gama. They also committed themselves to his mission of annexing Indian states. They invited him to build a fortress in Granganoor to accomplish his mission. The Hindu Kings of Kerala ended up paying heavily for the patronage they afforded to Syrian Christians. The Portuguese Viceroy was eventually ordered to convert the Prince of Cochin.

Renaissance was a period in Europe that opened the minds of the elite to the existence of other faiths across the world. The advancement in art, science and technology brought in a modern outlook in people in various nations of Europe and they began to question the methods and practices adopted by the Roman Catholic Church. This awareness resulted in gradual decline in the approach the Roman Catholic Church took in the matter of religious conversions. This also reduced Church sponsored torture for conversion across the world. The Protestants questioned the dominance of the Roman Catholic Church. The awareness created by modern Physics, Biology and Sociology resulted in an eventual rejection of the rule of Roman Catholic Church. The Church turned the tables on them by portraying that these new ideas had foundations in the theories originally propounded by the Church. It began referring to them as ‘Christian Science’. It then propounded a theory that Science and Faith are separate and faith cannot and should not be measured by the yardstick of Science.

The British who ruled India established their own Church of England. They did not want to destabilise their rule by directly confronting the faiths followed by people in India. They, therefore, began dissociating with the Missionaries outwardly. However, the British Government and the missionaries shared the same goal at one level: to destroy the sense of nationalism in Indians and thereby kill the spirit of resistance against the British rule. Systematically, through Macaulay’s education policy and dogmas such as Aryan Invasion, biased interpretation of Indian history, misinterpretation of caste system, commentary on Indian socio-political structures, census policy, the segregation of Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists from Hindu mainstream, supporting Muslim separatist movements etc., they injected their own divisive thought systems into University education to evolve a new breed of Indian citizens modelled on the British thought. The Missionaries deployed all these along with a sustained smear campaign on Hindu deities to ease the process of conversions. The Government allowed the missionaries a free growth path by granting their requests to open schools, colleges and hospitals across India and also allowed the allopathic system of medicine to gain wide acceptability. People who converted to Christianity received special favours and gained reservations in jobs and promotions. Converted Christians were indoctrinated into the ways of life of the British to ensure their continued loyalty to the Church and the British rule. The Indians were amazed at the kind of Institutions the British developed and I have seen this in Indians I know (however, we are now building much bigger institutions) However, we must not forget that they used the colleges to provide medical skills to Christians and to ensure their progress. Let us look at the support the British Government extended to Christians in building such institutions: A young man I know was praising the British for their enterprising nature that led to the conversion of forests to coffee plantations. A retired Revenue Official explained to me: A recommendation used to go out to the King’s Government from the resident British Official at Bangalore that some specified people had to be granted land for coffee estates. The recommendation was nothing but an Order. This order would then be passed down to a Taluk Amaldar through the District Administrator. The Amaldar would then appoint a revenue inspector to accompany a horse-ridden White King (all Whites were referred to as ‘King’ then) who would then go to a mountain top and point out an area of land with the tip of his index finger and demand that that land was needed. The revenue inspector would then obediently measure the land and report to higher officials. Within a week, the British Citizen would get thousands of acres of forests. The man would then employ locals to cut trees which he would sell to raise money for his coffee plantation. The Imperial Bank would lend money to such people (interest free) until the coffee trees bore fruit and once the crop yielded the interest rate would be one percent. Wasn’t it then brave of British citizens to build hill-top bungalows overlooking their vast coffee plantations? Well, how could Indians summon such courage? It is said that the Planters Association at Sakaleshpur bore a sign that read: “Locals and Dogs not allowed”.

These three Prophetic Religions born out of the desert and the religions born in India have one fundamental difference. All these Prophets claimed that their word was the ultimate truth and that God’s word has been sent through them. They demanded absolute submission and the alternative they offered was hell. They also propounded that God’s word, as pronounced by them, ought to be spread across the world as a message using violence if needed. Prophetic religions are basically blind-faiths. Indian faiths that derive their roots from the Vedas state: ekam sat viprAh bahudha vadanti (There is only one truth- the learned men explain it in different ways). This free thought has found echo in several Indian religious channels. In Jain philosophy syadvAda (syat = possibility; existence) holds prime position. It delineates that there is nothing that can claim to be absolute truth – including what I say. There is every possibility that the exact opposite may be true or both could coexist. Jains identify the possibility of existence of up to seven truths at one time. This is an expression of the previously stated Vedic philosophy of One Truth. All Indian religious testaments agree on this basic philosophy. They encourage debate. This is perhaps what differentiates Indian religions that encourage exploration of truth from Prophetic Religions that command unflinching obedience to the Gospel. The Sages (Rishis) behind Vedas (texts outlining the basic tenets of what evolved to become the Hindu way of life) and Upanishads (texts containing the essence of Vedas) were not Prophets. Koenraad Elst, a Belgian Scholar on Religious Evaluation, states in his book Psychology of Prophetism: “Prophets talk a great deal about themselves. They ascribe special powers to themselves and state that they have a special connection with the Creator of the World. Sages, on the other hand, talk about Universal Truths and that these truths can be divined in a state of awareness which can be achieved through practice”. Koenraad Elst’s book is a must read for anyone who has a serious interest in the study of religions. The Buddha was not a Prophet but a Sage who indulged in the study of treatise belonging to the age of Upanishads. His insights are not contrary to the ones presented in the Upanishads. One might want to consult R D Ranade’s A Constructive Survey of the Upanishadic Philosophy (see the second section of the fourth volume. This has been translated to Kannada by R R Divakar, D R Bendre, and S B Joshi within two years of the printing of the original. I have a 2004 edition of the Kannada version printed by Gurudev Ranade Samadhi Trust, Nimbal, Bijapur). Vedic Religions, Jainism and Buddhism use the term Dharma (Way of Life) and not the term Religion, employed by Prophetic Religions.

The Vedic philosophy made our spiritual leaders silent bystanders when the prophetic religions annexed India. When the invading Rulers forced millions of men, women and children into submission, torture and conversion, our spiritual leaders saw it as an aberration in their behaviour and not as a flaw with the religion that advised conversion by force. There is a story concerning the then Seer of Shringeri Mutt Sri Chandrashekhara Bharati which is seen to depict the broad-mindedness of Hindus. When a European approached him and requested to be converted to a Hindu, the Swamiji is said to have replied, “You become a good Christian. You will then be seen as a Hindu, as well”. Did the Swamiji know that a ‘good’ Christian is expected to convert as many people as possible to Christianity? Or was he ensnared by the magnanimity of the Vedic Philosophy of One Truth? Or was he not able to tide over the mental block of accepting a person of another religion into the Hindu fold? These questions remain unanswered. When Muslims were forcing Hindus to convert, or when the Portuguese were conducting their inquisition in Goa and Malabar, or even when Christian priests were going around converting people in the guise of social service Hindu Leaders remained complacent instead of proactively analysing the underlying philosophy of these predatory religions. Sri Vidyaranya who was the source of inspiration and Guiding force behind the establishment of the Vijayanagara Empire was well-aware of the cultural and political milieu of his times. However, I have not come across any work of his that analyses the issues of his period. To my knowledge, Swami Dayananda Saraswati and Swami Vivekananda were the only Spiritual Leaders who directly approached the task of analysis of predatory religions from the perspective of philosophical and spiritual assessment. The lack of awareness of predatory religions among the Hindu spiritual Leaders of the past and present times is prevalent among most educated Hindus. This predatory philosophy is the driving force behind suicidal Jehadis and missionaries who travel far and wide into the Indian hinterland to convert people.

It is natural to evaluate the utility of religion in rendering service to the community in context of economic progress of the state. In the west the concept of Welfare State brought in a social security net that included education, healthcare services, employment guarantee, unemployment support, care for the elderly etc. This brought in the awareness that the Government can protect the interests of citizens and religion, therefore, is not necessary to ensure service. A few decades ago, Indians used to look at the Christian Church and admire the services it extended to the community. Today, many Hindu Institutions have started serving people in the same manner. However, at the philosophical level, is community service the primary duty of religious institutions? It is gratifying to see Hindu Institutions doing community service in the context of failure of corrupt Governments and Politicians to do so. However, to what extent are these religious institutions fountains of spiritual knowledge? Are our religious institutions today equipped to meet the spiritual needs of people, beyond Social needs such as food, clothing, shelter, education and healthcare? If we are to believe that spirituality is the source of our moral enlightenment, then spirituality must not be measured on the scale of community service.

In 1975, I had represented India in a one-month conference on Moral Education organised by UNESCO in Tokyo. We visited a few schools in Japan to understand how Moral Education is imparted. One of them was a Christian Missionary School. After a discussion, I asked the Principal, “How is your School different compared to other schools in this country?”
“A very good question,” he said, “about thirty of our students have converted to Christianity after coming of age”.

To him, morals meant conversion to Christianity. A non-Christian, therefore, is immoral. A Muslim Leader has said this about Mahatma Gandhi: “He may be a Mahatma, but he is worse than a sinful Muslim because he is not a Muslim”. Such bigots are not sensitive to the fact that morals are not affiliated to religion and that religious conversions must not take place through violence, coercion, torture, temptation or misinformation.

I have a question about Mother Teresa, who has great standing in international media and is today on the verge of Sainthood: Did she allow desolate Children who were sheltered by Missionaries of Charity to follow their religions? I had been to her institutions after her death. All children there have been converted to Christianity. Is this not a ploy for religious conversion? The Vatican Church funded such institutions and ensured that their work was glorified in Western media which was promptly echoed by Indian media without question. It is a pre-requisite for a person to have performed miracles during her/his lifetime to be considered for Sainthood. Nuns at Missionaries of Charity at Calcutta gave statements that they have witnessed Mother Teresa performing miracles. Intellectuals in India observed studied silence to such pronouncements when in the past they had vociferously questioned Sai Baba’s claims of miracles.

Now, I wish to narrate what I have witnessed in a few small villages about six decades ago. Village folk used to come out to see Siddaganga Swamiji (who used to go out in a bullock cart for alms) when they heard drums being beaten. Shivakumar Swamiji who is a centenarian now was about forty years old then. Village folk used to collect grains and vegetables from all houses and send them to Siddaganga which was about forty miles away, in their own bullock cart. Swamiji never used to ask for rations. He used to tell people: “Please send poor children from your villages to our institutions. We will provide for them and educate them. Education is very important”. The number of children then was limited. Over a period of time, it has grown to about eight thousand. Swamiji followed the path of renunciation and through the process of seeking alms, increased the number of people benefitting from Dasoha by visiting three to four villages every day. He offered shelter to children of all faiths. I have seen even Muslim children there who were not wearing lingas (a sign of conversion to Lingayat caste of Hinduism). Their belief is that religion is a matter of personal preference; our job is to provide them value-based education. He got his dues only recently by the Kannada media when he turned a centenarian. He never got the publicity that Mother Teresa got. It is certainly not a matter of dissonance too that he did not get wide-spread press. It is one of the five principles of renunciation to offer the credit of all good deeds to God. Stating that one has achieved something fuels egotism. Such people cannot reach higher levels of Yogic attainment. Malladihalli Raghavendra Swamiji, Baba Amte, Dr. Sudarshan of BiligiriRanga Hills and several others have dedicated their lives to selfless service. However, none of them have received the press received by Mother Teresa despite rendering greater service since they were not serving Jesus!

A lot of people live by the philosophy that they will be true Christians only when they convert at least a few people to their faith. This motivates thousands of people to spend their time in converting people to Christianity in remote corners of India. They receive training, support, funds, guidance and of course political backup (in case of adversity) from foreign missionaries. Hindus know only losing people to conversion and not gaining people. The Judiciary has interpreted a law related to religious conversion. However, who will implement it? When Hindus hand over people attempting to convert others to Police Custody, they are branded as fundamentalists by the media. Police does not take action. People who violate the law do not get punished. People who attempt to stem conversions are targeted by Christian institutions, political parties, self-proclaimed intellectuals and sundry entities of all hues. The Government arrests them on the pretext that they were spreading communal disharmony. Congress is used to sacrificing the interests of Hindus and defending such acts from the time of Nehru. Mahatma Gandhi had lost control over Congress before independence. Nehru’s viewpoints were always contrary to the Mahatma’s. Today, Congress is being controlled by a lady from the country that hosts Vatican City. It is essential for money-minded Congressmen to toe her line if they wish to stay in Congress. They then do not summon courage to criticise her policy of sponsoring conversions. Non-Congress Politicians like Devegowda, Mulayam Singh, Lalu Prasad Yadav and others have an eye on the lower-caste vote bank and choose to dissociate themselves from the BJP which has been branded as a pro-Hindu party. Communists swear by anti-Hindu principle. Today’s intellectuals are products of Macaulay’s education system. Most of our politicians are hypocrites who spend their mornings performing rituals in Hindu temples and publicly proclaim that they visit Masjids to pray to be born as a Muslim in their next life! Such politicians sit before statues of Gandhi fasting till noon to oppose people who resist conversions. Dalit Intellectuals oppose the suggestion to ban conversions. They fear that they will lose the trump card of threatening to convert to Christianity or Islam. The Church is attempting to provide reservations to Dalits who convert to Christianity thus eradicating the barrier for Dalits to convert; this is again opposed by Dalit intellectuals. They do not want to share the Dalit quota with Dalits who convert to Christianity. Y Samuel Rajashekhara Reddy, the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, is implementing a strategic plan to first provide reservations to Muslims and then extending it to Dalit-Christians. Dalit intellectuals who encourage the Dalit community to convert to Buddhism choose to place themselves under the Dalit category in official records. They also advise Hindu spiritual leaders who oppose conversion to mind their own business. Are Hindu spiritual Leaders meant only to bless self-serving politicians who fall at their feet in full public view during elections?

In such circumstances, when a few people oppose mass conversions, the pro-conversion lobby makes a big issue of it. Christian institutions appeal to Christian-dominated international media to stop the ‘doomsday’ in India! France has prohibited children from wearing religious symbols- especially Muslim and Sikh headgear- to bring in a sense of French nationalism. The Indian Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh had planned to submit an appeal on behalf of the Sikh Community (to allow Sikh boys to wear religious headgear) to French President Sarkozy. However, he ended up assuring them that he will take immediate action on the riots in Karnataka and Orissa on his return without bothering to explain the situation. He is now attempting to place these state governments under President’s (read Congress’) rule on the pretext of the anti-conversion riots in these states.

Some people may go underground to protect themselves from the backlash they experience when they try to oppose conversion which should actually be stopped by a democratically elected government. Who will be responsible for their acts if they choose underhanded means to oppose conversion in future? Do we not have people who feel that they should react to the situation since the Government and political parties have shown lack of will and capacity in countering Islamic Terrorism? The US has not faced another act of terrorism since September 2001. People die every single day in some part of our country due to acts of terrorism. It is foolish to expect power-hungry politicians will stop this. Terrorists plan to usurp power by continuously committing acts of terror all over the country. Lenin, Mao Tse Tung, Prachanda, Naxals have all employed this technique. Wouldn’t Hindu people be tempted to tread this path? Would we be able to stop them through public criticism of such acts when this happens?

Politicians, Media and self-proclaimed intellectuals who base their power-play on religion will have to reflect on this question today with sincerity and responsibility.

Francois Gautier ends his article with these words: “Are we moving towards a Christian India under the stewardship of Sonia Gandhi? If yes, then it is a great loss not just for India but for the whole world because spirituality in its truest form is alive only in India today”.

Suggested Reading:
1.
Chandrayaan-1 (Sanskrit: चंद्रयान-1) is an unmanned lunar exploration mission by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), India's national space agency. It is also India's first mission to the moon. The mission includes a lunar orbiter and an impactor. The spacecraft was launched by a modified version of the PSLV XL on 22 October 2008 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. "Chandrayaan" roughly translates to "lunar-sojourn" in many Indian languages.

The remote sensing satellite weighs 1,308 kilograms (2,884 lb) (590 kilograms (1,301 lb) initial orbit mass and 504 kilograms (1,111 lb) dry mass) and carries high resolution remote sensing equipment for visible, near
infrared, soft and hard X-ray frequencies. Over a two-year period, it is intended to survey the lunar surface to produce a complete map of its chemical characteristics and 3-dimensional topography. The polar regions are of special interest, as they might contain ice.

The spacecraft was successfully launched on 22 October 2008 at 06:23 IST (00:52 UTC).The estimated cost for the project is Rs. 3.86 billion (US$ 80 million).

The mission includes five ISRO payloads and six payloads from other international space agencies including NASA, ESA, and the Bulgarian Aerospace Agency, which are being carried free of cost.

Objectives

The stated scientific objectives of the mission are:

* To design, develop and launch and orbit a spacecraft around the Moon using Indian made Lauch vehicle.

* Conduct scientific experiments using instruments on-board the spacecraft which will yield the following results:

* To prepare a three-dimensional atlas (with high spatial and altitude resolution of 5-10 m) of both near and far side of the moon.

* To conduct chemical and mineralogical mapping of the entire lunar surface for distribution of mineral and chemical elements such as Magnesium, Aluminum, Silicon, Calcium, Iron and Titanium as well as high atomic number elements such as Radon, Uranium & Thorium with high spatial resolution.

* To Impact a sub-satellite ( Moon Impact Probe -MIP ) on the surface on the Moon as a fore-runner to future soft landing missions.

Specifications

Mass
1380 kg at launch, 675 kg at lunar orbit, and 523 kg after releasing the impactor.

Dimensions
Cuboid in shape of approximately 1.5 m

Communications
X band, 0.7 m diameter parabolic antenna for payload data transmission. The Telemetry, Tracking & Command (TTC) communication operates in S band frequency.

Power
The spacecraft is mainly powered by its solar array, which includes one solar panel covering a total area of 2.15 x 1.8 m generating 700 W of power, which is stored in a 36 A·h Lithium-ion battery. The spacecraft uses a bipropellant integrated propulsion system to reach lunar orbit as well as orbit and altitude maintenance while orbiting the Moon.

Space flight

Chandrayaan-1 was launched on 22 October 2008 at 6.22 am IST from Satish Dhawan Space Centre using ISRO's 44.4 metre tall four-stage PSLV launch rocket. Chandrayaan will take 15 days to reach the lunar orbit. ISRO's telemetry, tracking and command network (ISTRAC) at Peenya in Bangalore, will be tracking and controlling Chandrayaan-1 over the next two years of its life span.

Since its launch, Chandrayaan has performed several engine burns, moving it into the designated geostationary transfer orbit (GTO) around earth and has successfully communicated with base center.

Once in GTO, Chandrayaan's on-board motor will be fired to increase its orbit around the earth. The orbit will be raised five times till it reaches 1,019 km perigee and 386,194 km apogee from the Earth around 8 November. This orbit will take the spacecraft to the vicinity of the moon. The spacecraft will rotate for about five-and-a-half days before firing the engine to slow its velocity for moon's gravity to capture it. As the spacecraft approaches the moon, its speed will be reduced to enable the gravity of the moon to capture it into an elliptical orbit. A series of engine burns will then lower its orbit to its intended 100 km circular polar orbit. Following this, the Moon Impact Probe (MIP) will be ejected from Chandrayaan-1 and all the scientific instruments/payloads are commissioned.

Chandrayaan-1 completed four orbits around the Earth, on 23 October: "The health of the spacecraft is normal and (it is) doing fine. Spinning in elliptical orbit once in every 6 hours and 30 minutes, it has completed four orbits and is in the fifth orbit."

The first orbit-raising manoeuvre of Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft was performed at 09:00 hrs IST on 23 October 2008 when the spacecraft’s 440 Newton Liquid Engine was fired for about 18 minutes by commanding the spacecraft from Spacecraft Control Centre (SCC) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) at Peenya, Bangalore. With this engine firing, Chandrayaan-1’s apogee has been raised to 37,900 km, while its perigee has been raised a little, to 305 km. In this orbit, Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft takes about 11 hours to go round the Earth once.

The second orbit-raising manoeuvre of Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft was carried out on 25 October 2008 at 05:48 IST when the spacecraft’s 440 Newton Liquid Engine was fired for about 16 minutes by commanding the spacecraft from Spacecraft Control Centre (SCC) at ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC) at Peenya, Bangalore. With this engine firing, Chandrayaan-1’s apogee has been further raised to 74,715 km, while its perigee has been raised to 336 km, thus completing 20 percent of its journey. In this orbit, Chandrayaan-1 spacecraft takes about twenty-five and a half hours to go round the Earth once. This is the first time an Indian spacecraft has gone beyond the 36,000 km high geostationary orbit and reached an altitude more than twice that height.

The third orbit-raising manoeuvre was initiated on 26 October 2008 at 07:08 IST. The Liquid Apogee Motor was fired for about nine and a half minutes. With this, Chandrayaan-1 entered a much higher elliptical orbit around the Earth. The apogee of this orbit lies at 164,600 km, instead of 199,277 km apogee as originally announced by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), while the perigee is at 348 km. In this orbit, Chandrayaan-1 takes about 73 hours to go round the Earth once.

The fourth orbit-raising manoeuvre was carried out on October 29, 2008 at 07:38 IST. The spacecraft's liquid engine was fired for about three minutes, raising it to a more elliptical orbit whose apogee lies at 267,000 km while the perigee lies at 465 km. This makes its present orbit extends more than half the way to moon. In this orbit, the spacecraft takes about six days to go round the Earth once.

Men behind the mission

The scientists considered instrumental to the success of the Chandrayaan-1 project are:

* G. Madhavan Nair–Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation
* T. K. Alex–Director, ISAC (ISRO Satellite Centre)
* Mylswamy Annadurai–Project director
* S. K.
Bhubaneswar, October 17: : The Orissa police on Thursday claimed that the mastermind of VHP leader Laxamananda Saraswati's killing, which sparked a wave of communal violence in Kandhamal district, had been identified as a group which hired the Maoists to execute the crime.

"Maoists were given money to train certain youths of a particular community to eliminate Saraswati", Inspector General (IG) of Police, crime branch, Arun Ray said, claiming the mastermind of the killings had been identified.

The mastermind has fled Orissa the IG said, adding "we will trace them soon." The plan to eliminate Saraswati was made immediately after the December 2007, communal violence in Kandhamal, he said.

Elaborating on the probe by the crime branch, he said investigations also showed that a group had collected money from some villages in Kandhamal which was given to the Maoist group to train their youths for the purpose. At least 60 youths were given arms training by Maoists, the IG said dwelling on the inputs from three arrested persons.

Ray said members of a particular community were unhappy with Saraswati and held him responsible for the riots which took place during Christmas in 2007. They requested a Maoist group to assist them in killing Saraswati, he said.

The police investigation said six Telugu-speaking persons had fired at Saraswati and others and a trained group were guarding the ashram at Jalespeta in Kandhamal during the incident.

Refusing to divulge identity and religion of the mastermind behind the killing, the IG said Maoists only executed the crime.

While the motive behind Saraswati's killing was clear, the sleuths gathered evidence against the people who plotted the crime not realising that it would trigger such large-scale violence, he said.

Karan tapper exposing Arjun Singh

KAran Thapar exposing Arjun Singh

Karan Thapar: Do you personally also, as Minister of Human Resource Development, believe that a reservation is the right and proper way to help the OBCs?
Arjun Singh: Certainly, that is one of the most important ways to do it.
Karan Thapar: The right way?
Arjun Singh: Also the right way.
Karan Thapar: In which case, let's ask a few basic questions; we are talking about the reservations for the OBCs in particular. Do you know what percentage of the Indian population is OBC? Mandal puts it at 52 per cent, the National Sample Survey Organization at 32 per cent, the National Family and Health Survey at 29.8 per cent, which is the correct figure?
Arjun Singh: I think that should be decided by people who are more knowledgeable. But the point is that the OBCs form a fairly sizeable percentage of our population.
Karan Thapar: No doubt, but the reason why it is important to know 'what percentage' they form is that if you are going to have reservations for them, then you must know what percentage of the population they are, otherwise you don't know whether they are already adequately catered in higher educational institutions or not.
Arjun Singh: That is obvious - they are not.
Karan Thapar: Why is it obvious?
Arjun Singh: Obvious because it is something which we all see.
Karan Thapar: Except for the fact that the NSSO, which is a government appointed body, has actually in its research in 1999 - which is the most latest research shown - that 23.5 per cent of all university seats are already with the OBCs. And that is just 8..5 per cent less than what the NSSO believes is the OBC share of the population. So, for a difference of 8 per cent, would reservations be the right way of making up the difference?
Arjun Singh: I wouldn't like to go behind all this because, as I said, Parliament has taken a view and it has taken a decision, I am a servant of Parliament and I will only implement.
Karan Thapar: Absolutely, Parliament has taken a view, I grant it. But what people question is the

people question is the simple fact - Is there a need for reservations? If you don't know what percentage of the country is OBC, and if furthermore, the NSSO is correct in pointing out that already 23.5 per cent of the college seats are with the OBC, then you don't have a case in terms of need.
Arjun Singh: College seats, I don't know.
Karan Thapar: According to the NSSO - which is a government appointed body - 23.5 per cent of the college seats are already with the OBCs.
Arjun Singh: What do you mean by college seats?
Karan Thapar: University seats, seats of higher education.
Arjun Singh: Well, I don't know I have not come across that far.
Karan Thapar: So, when critics say to you that you don't have a case for reservation in terms of need, what do you say to them?
Arjun Singh: I have said what I had to say and the point is that it is not an issue for us to now debate.
Karan Thapar: You mean the chapter is now closed?
Arjun Singh: The decision has been taken.
Karan Thapar: Regardless of whether there is a need or not, the decision is taken and it is a closed chapter.
Arjun Singh: So far as I can see, it is a closed chapter and that is why I have to implement what all Parliaments have said.
Karan Thapar: Minister, it is not just in terms of 'need' that your critics question the decision to have reservation for OBCs in higher education. More importantly, they question whether reservations themselves are efficacious and can work.
For example, a study done by the IITs themselves shows that 50 per cent of the IIT seats for the SCs and STs remain vacant and for the remaining 50 per cent, 25 per cent are the candidates, who even after six years fail to get their degrees. So, clearly, in their case, reservations are .
Arjun Singh: I would only say that on this issue, it would not be correct to go by all these figures that have been paraded.
Karan Thapar: You mean the IIT figures themselves could be dubious?
Arjun Singh: Not dubious, but I think that is not the last word.
Karan Thapar: All

Karan Thapar: All right, maybe the IIT may not be the last word, let me then quote to you the report of the Parliamentary Committee on the welfare for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes - that is a Parliamentary body.
It says that looking at the Delhi University, between 1995 and 2000; just half the seats for under-graduates at the Scheduled Castes level and just one-third of the seats for under-graduates at the Scheduled Tribes level were filled. All the others went empty, unfilled. So, again, even in Delhi University, reservations are .
Arjun Singh: If they are , it does not mean that for that reason we don't need them. There must be some other reason why they are and that can be certainly probed and examined. But to say that for this reason, 'no reservations need to be done' is not correct.
Karan Thapar: Fifty years after the reservations were made, statistics show, according to The Hindustan Times, that overall in India, only 16 per cent of the places in higher education is occupied by SCs and STs. The quota is 22.5 per cent, which means that only two-thirds of the quota is occupied. One third is going waste, it is being denied to other people.
Arjun Singh: As I said, the kinds of figures that have been brought out, in my perception, do not reflect the realities. Realities are something much more and of course, there is an element of prejudice also.
Karan Thapar: But these are figures that come from a Parliamentary Committee. It can't be prejudiced; they are your own colleagues.
Arjun Singh: Parliamentary Committee has given the figures, but as to why this has not happened, that is a different matter.
Karan Thapar: I put it to you that you don't have a case for reservations in terms of need; you don't have a case for reservations in terms of their efficacy, why then, are you insisting on extending them to the OBCs?
Arjun Singh: I don't want to use that word, but I think that your argument is basically fallacious.
Karan Thapar: But it is based on all the f

Karan Thapar: But it is based on all the facts available in the public domain.
Arjun Singh: Those are facts that need to be gone into with more care. What lies behind those facts, why this has not happened, that is also a fact.
Karan Thapar: Let's approach the issue of reservations differently in that case. Reservations mean that a lesser-qualified candidate gets preference over a more qualified candidate, solely because in this case, he or she happens to be an OBC. In other words, the upper castes are being penalized for being upper caste.
Arjun Singh: Nobody is being penalized and that is a factor that we are trying to address. I think that the prime Minister will be talking to all the political parties and will be putting forward a formula, which will see that nobody is being penalized.
Karan Thapar: I want very much to talk about that formula, but before we come to talk about how you are going to address concerns, let me point one other corollary - Reservations also gives preference and favor to caste over merit. Is that acceptable in a modern society?
Arjun Singh: I don't think the perceptions of modern society fit India entirely.
Karan Thapar: You mean India is not a modern society and therefore can't claim to be treated as one?
Arjun Singh: It is emerging as a modern society, but the parameters of a modern society do not apply to large sections of the people in this country.

Now take a moment to congratulate Karan Thapar for skillfully exposing Arjun Singh for the clueless Minister that he is. Sure the government is not.

80000+ children left state syllabus schools and moved to CBSE, ICSE syllabus schools. It is a huge erosion. Our little state is having multi standards and schools which rip the poor kids.

Governments coming are always wanted to have their agenda in practice through young minds. But who is suffering at the end? the poor who have not enough money to send their kids to privately owned rip off schools.

One of the renowned public school in Trichur is witnessing almost 60% erosion of their students. This schools used to have students rushing at one time and was standing top 10 in the state with more than 3000 students. Now they have only 600 students.

Open your eyes dear mallus. It is good if we are all come under a national standards, but can everyone afford this?

After the infamous Thanthri scandal... here is a real one....

Thiruvananthapuram, October 15: A Catholic bishop in Kerala has sparked off a controversy and embarrassed the Church by adopting a 26-year-old woman. Following complaints from priests, the Latin Catholic Church has initiated a multi-level probe into the adoption by John Thattunkal, 58, the Bishop of Cochin.
Sources say the bishop adopted the woman with the consent of her non-Catholic Christian family, hailing from Pathanamthitta in central kerala.
Thattunkal met the woman during a pilgrimage abroad and was impressed by her “spirituality and divine experience.” “I have only fatherly love towards the woman who has spiritual powers. This relation is giving me spiritual refreshment,” Thattunkal was quoted by Mathrubhoomi, a Malayalam newspaper, as saying.
When The Indian Express tried to reach him on Tuesday, the bishop was not available for comments. “He has been in meditation the whole day,” said Fr Thambi Antony, diocese public relations officer. Antony declined to comment on the controversy as the issue is being looked into by the Church authorities.
The bishop, who holds a doctorate in Canon law and civil law, cleared the adoption formalities at the sub-registrar office in Mattancheri. Sub-registrar Sudhakaran told this newspaper that the adoption deed was registered in the second week of September. “Two priests from the diocese had signed as witnesses and in the deed, the woman was stated to be adopted as a daughter of the bishop,” he said.
After the adoption, the woman stayed in a guest house within the Bishop House compound in Fort Kochi. After this became an issue among a section of priests in the Cochin diocese, she left the guest house.
A senior priest from Cochin diocese said the issue is likely to snowball into a major scandal. “The moot question is why the bishop adopted a young woman for so-called spiritual nourishment. The future course of the issue would depend on his explanation,” the priest said.
Kerala Catholic Bishop’s Council Secretary Fr Alathara Stephen said that the Archdiocese of Verapoly and Apostolic Nuncio to India Arch Bishop Pedro Lopez Quintaine (Vatican’s representative in the country) have already initiated separate inquiries after complaints from the Cochin diocese. Action, if any, would be taken by Vatican, based on the Nuncio’s report.
“A bishop can adopt a person while a priest has to get the consent of his bishop for the same action. In the past, no bishop in Kerala has resorted to this kind of adoption,” Stephen said. Asked whether the bishop’s action amounted to a scandal, Stephen said the gravity of the offence would depend upon the position held by the offender.
Monsignor Sebastain Luis, the Vicar-General of Verapoly archdiocese, under which the diocese of Cochin falls, said the issue is being secretly looked into by the Bishops’ Council and other Church bodies. “At the same time, we cannot hide action against the bishop, if taken at a later stage,” he said.
Bishop Thattungal has maintained that he adopted the woman according to the Church laws. “In the past too, bishops and priests have adopted children... She did not stay in the Bishop’s House, she stayed in the nearby guest house along with her father. We had travelled by the same car for spiritual programmes. I have explained my stand to Verapoly Archbishop Daniel Acharuparambil and Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Pedro Lopez,” he told Mathrubhoomi. “A lobby, including certain priests, has been working against me in the diocese,” he said.

Bank of America Corp's $50 billion acquisition of Merrill Lynch & Co would mark the end of a storied name in American finance, but create the nation's biggest bank by far. And now U.S. Government to Take Over AIG in $85 Billion Bailout; Central Banks Inject Cash as Credit Dries Up . and now JP Morgan !!!!!!!!
America’s middle-class families are struggling. I met an American friend yester day. He had a mortgage for $ 3 50 000 in 1999 and the current value of his house is $ 1 75 000. And now he is paying his mortgage loan for nothing !!
With the current economic downturn, economists, policymakers, and pundits alike now recognize what many middle-class families have long been feeling: that their financial security is in decline. Although economists officially announced the beginning of a recession this year, the sharp downturn in economic growth certainly has made things worse for families who have been struggling for years with massive amounts of debt, declining incomes, and rising prices.
Corporate scandals over the past five years have fittingly brought the integrity of U.S. capital markets under scrutiny, provoking a significant legislative and regulatory response.

For the past two years, the Center for American Progress has calculated a number of middle-class financial security indicators to measure how many families have the financial resources for a spell of unemployment, for a medical emergency, for both, or for an unspecified economic emergency equal to three months of their income. Figures demonstrate the financial and economic roller coaster ride that America’s middle class has been on.
The trends since 1989, showed an increase in middle-class security through the 1990s. After 2000, however, the situation deteriorated very quickly all of the gains in middle class economic security were erased within a few years.
there can be no doubt that with worsening economic conditions middle class economic security is taking an ever harder hit.
What you think about it ? U a victim of current situation ?

LARGE HADRON COLLIDER - (switched on- 10/09/08)

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator complex, intended to collide opposing beams of protons charged with approximately 7 TeV of energy. Its main purpose is to explore the validity and limitations of the Standard Model, the current theoretical picture for particle physics. It is theorized that the collider will produce the Higgs boson, the observation of which could confirm the predictions and missing links in the Standard Model, and could explain how other elementary particles acquire properties such as mass.

The LHC was built by the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), and lies underneath the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva, Switzerland. It is funded by and built in collaboration with over eight thousand physicists from over eighty-five countries as well as hundreds of universities and laboratories. The LHC is already operational and is presently in the process of being prepared for collisions. The first beams were circulated through the collider on 10 September 2008, and the first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled on 21 October 2008.

Although a few individuals have questioned the safety of the planned experiments in the media and through the courts, the consensus in the scientific community is that there is no conceivable threat from the LHC particle collisions.

Design

The LHC is the world's largest and highest-energy particle accelerator.[1] The collider is contained in a circular tunnel with a circumference of 27 kilometres (17 mi) at a depth ranging from 50 to 175 metres underground.[2] The 3.8 metre (150 inches) diameter, concrete-lined tunnel, constructed between 1983 and 1988, was formerly used to house the Large Electron-Positron Collider.[3] It crosses the border between Switzerland and France at four points, but most of it is in France. Surface buildings hold ancillary equipment such as compressors, ventilation equipment, control electronics and refrigeration plants.

The collider tunnel contains two adjacent beam pipes, each containing a proton beam - a proton is one type of hadron. The two beams travel in opposite directions around the ring. Some 1,232 dipole magnets keep the beams on their circular path, while an additional 392 quadrupole magnets are used to keep the beams focused, in order to maximize the chances of interaction between the particles in the four intersection points, where the two beams will cross. In total, over 1,600 superconducting magnets are installed, with most weighing over 27 tonnes. Approximately 96 tonnes of liquid helium is needed to keep the magnets at their operating temperature of 1.9 K, making the LHC the largest cryogenic facility in the world at liquid helium temperature.

Once or twice a day, as the protons are accelerated from 450 GeV to 7 TeV, the field of the superconducting dipole magnets will be increased from 0.54 T to 8.3 T. The protons will each have an energy of 7 TeV, giving a total collision energy of 14 TeV (2.2 μJ). At this energy the protons have a lorentz factor of about 7,500 and move at about 99.999999% of light speed. It will take less than 90 microseconds for a proton to travel once around the main ring - a speed of about 11,000 revolutions per second. Rather than continuous beams, the protons will be bunched together, into 2,808 bunches, so that interactions between the two beams will take place at discrete intervals never shorter than 25 ns apart. When the collider is first commissioned, it will be operated with fewer bunches, to give a bunch crossing interval of 75 ns. The number of bunches will later be increased to give a final bunch crossing interval of 25 ns.[5]

Prior to being injected into the main accelerator, the particles are prepared by a series of systems that successively increase their energy. The first system is the linear particle accelerator Linac 2 generating 50 MeV protons, which feeds the Proton Synchrotron Booster. There the protons are accelerated to 1.4 GeV and injected into the Proton Synchrotron (PS), where they are accelerated to 26 GeV. Finally the Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS) is used to increase their energy to 450 GeV before they are at last injected (over a period of 20 minutes) into the main ring, where proton bunches are accumulated, accelerated (over a period of 20 minutes) to their peak 7 TeV energy, and finally stored for many hours (10 to 24) while collisions occur at the four intersection points.

Detectors

Six detectors are being constructed at the LHC, located underground in large caverns excavated at the LHC's intersection points. Two of them, the ATLAS experiment and the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS), are large, general purpose particle detectors.[1] "A Large Ion Collider Experiment" (ALICE) is designed to study the properties of quark-gluon plasma from the debris of heavy-ion collisions. The other three, LHCb, TOTEM, and LHCf, are smaller and more specialized. The BBC's summary of the detectors is:[7]

ATLAS - one of two so-called general purpose detectors. Atlas will be used to look for signs of new physics, including the origins of mass and extra dimensions.

CMS - the other general purpose detector will, like ATLAS, hunt for the Higgs boson and look for clues to the nature of dark matter.

ALICE - will study a "liquid" form of matter called quark-gluon plasma that existed shortly after the Big Bang.

LHCb - equal amounts of matter and anti-matter were created in the Big Bang. LHCb will try to investigate what happened to the "missing" anti-matter.

Purpose

When activated, it is theorized that the collider will produce the elusive Higgs boson. The verification of the existence of the Higgs boson would be a significant step in the search for a Grand Unified Theory, which seeks to unify three of the four known fundamental forces: electromagnetism, the strong nuclear force and the weak nuclear force, leaving out only gravity. The Higgs boson may also help to explain why gravitation is so weak compared with the other three forces. In addition to the Higgs boson, other theorized particles, models and states might be produced, and for some searches are planned, including supersymmetric particles,[8] compositeness (technicolor),[9]extra dimensions,[10] strangelets,[11]micro black holes[12] and magnetic monopoles.[13]

Test timeline

September 2008

The first beam was allegedly circulated through the collider on the morning of 10 September 2008.[17] CERN successfully fired the protons around the tunnel in stages, several kilometres at a time. The particles were fired in a clockwise direction into the accelerator and successfully steered around it at 10:28 am local time.[18] The LHC successfully completed its first major test: after a series of trial runs, two white dots flashed on a computer screen showing the protons traveled the full length of the Collider. CERN next successfully sent a beam of protons in a counterclockwise direction. Eventually two beams will be fired in opposite directions with the aim of smashing together protons to create particles from the energy of the proton collisions.[19][20][21] It took less than one hour to guide the stream of particles around its inaugural circuit.[22]

October 2008

The first high-energy collisions are planned to take place after the LHC is officially unveiled on 21 October 2008

Cost

The total cost of the project is anticipated to be between €3.2 to €6.4 billion.[1] The construction of LHC was approved in 1995 with a budget of 2.6 billion Swiss francs (€1.6 billion), with another 210 million francs (€140 million) towards the cost of the experiments. However, cost over-runs, estimated in a major review in 2001 at around 480 million francs (€300 million) for the accelerator, and 50 million francs (€30 million) for the experiments, along with a reduction in CERN's budget, pushed the completion date from 2005 to April 2007.[25] 180 million francs (€120 million) of the cost increase have been due to the superconducting magnets. There were also engineering difficulties encountered while building the underground cavern for the Compact Muon Solenoid. In part this was due to faulty parts loaned to CERN by fellow laboratories Argonne National Laboratory or Fermilab

Computing resources

The LHC Computing Grid is being constructed to handle the massive amounts of data produced by the Large Hadron Collider. It incorporates both private fiber optic cable links and existing high-speed portions of the public Internet, to get data from CERN to academic institutions around the world.

The distributed computing project LHC@home was started to support the construction and calibration of the LHC. The project uses the BOINC platform to simulate how particles will travel in the tunnel. With this information, the scientists will be able to determine how the magnets should be calibrated to gain the most stable "orbit" of the beams in the ring.

Safety issues

Safety of particle collisions

Main article: Safety of the Large Hadron Collider

Although some individuals, including some scientists, have questioned the safety of the planned experiments in the media and through the courts, the consensus in the scientific community is that there is no basis for any conceivable threat from the LHC particle collisions.[27][28][29]

Operational safety

The size of the LHC constitutes an exceptional engineering challenge with unique operational issues on account of the huge energy stored in the magnets and the beams.[6][30] While operating, the total energy stored in the magnets is 10 GJ (equivalent to 2.4 tons of TNT) and the total energy carried by the two beams reaches 724 MJ.[31]

Loss of only one ten-millionth part (10−7) of the beam is sufficient to quench a superconducting magnet, while the beam dump must absorb an energy equivalent to that of a typical air-dropped bomb. These immense energies are even more impressive when one considers how little matter is carrying it. Under nominal operating conditions (2,808 bunches per beam, 1.15×1011 protons per bunch), the beam pipes contain 1.0×10-9 gram of hydrogen, which, in standard conditions for temperature and pressure, would fill the volume of one grain of fine sand.

Construction accidents and delays

On 25 October 2005, a technician was killed in the LHC tunnel when a crane load was accidentally dropped.[32] On 27 March 2007 a cryogenic magnet support broke during a pressure test involving one of the LHC's inner triplet (focusing quadrupole) magnet assemblies, provided by Fermilab and KEK. No one was injured. Fermilab director Pier Oddone stated "In this case we are dumbfounded that we missed some very simple balance of forces". This fault had been present in the original design, and remained during four engineering reviews over the following years.[33] Analysis revealed that its design, made as thin as possible for better insulation, was not strong enough to withstand the forces generated during pressure testing. Details are available in a statement from Fermilab, with which CERN is in agreement.[34][35] Repairing the broken magnet and reinforcing the eight identical assemblies used by LHC delayed the startup date,[36] then planned for November 2007, by several weeks.

In popular culture

The Large Hadron Collider has been featured in a number of novels, including Flashforward by Robert J. Sawyer, Black Hole by Angelo Paratico,[37] and Decipher by Stel Pavlou, which described it in some detail. One of the most visible examples is Angels & Demons by Dan Brown, which involves dangerous antimatter created at the LHC used as a weapon against the Vatican. CERN published a "Fact or Fiction?" page discussing the accuracy of the book's portrayal of the LHC, CERN, and particle physics in general.[38] The movie version of the book had footage filmed on-site at one of the experiments at the LHC; the director, Ron Howard, also met with CERN experts in an effort to make the science in the story more accurate.[39] Katherine McAlpine, aka "alpinekat", a science writer working at CERN, wrote the lyrics for a personal rap video about the LHC called the "The Large Hadron Rap".[40][41][42] The song was added to YouTube on 28 July 2008,[43] and, as of 6 September, it had been viewed more than a million times.[41]

BBC Radio 4 is broadcasting "Big Bang Day" on 10 September 2008 to coincide with the LHC being switched on. Included in this event will be a radio episode of the TV series Torchwood, with a plot surrounding the LHC, entitled Lost Souls.[44][45]

On September 10, to commemorate the firing of the Large Hadron Collider, Google displayed a custom logo[46] with a drawing of the LHC which linked to a web search for "Large Hadron Collider". It is a tradition for Google to change their logo to represent what they consider to be important or interesting events.

SOURCE: Wikipedia

SUFFERING FROM PAIN

For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted; Nor has He hidden His face from Him; But when He cried to Him, He heard.
Psalm 22:24

Loving Father!

I thank and praise for this gift of life, which You have so graciously given but Lord I am weary of undergoing this agony, pain and anguish, which is hindering my normal life. How long should I suffer like this, Lord? Have mercy upon me and deliver me from this pain.

Lord, if I have displeased You in any way, kindly forgive me and heal me. The Scripture says that You have already borne our griefs and sorrows on the cross and that we are healed by Your stripes. I look up to You, my Master! Let Your healing hands touch me and heal me of this agony.

I know that You are full of love and compassion. You are the Lord of healings and everything is possible with You. I pray in Your precious name that this sickness be removed from me. Thank You for answering my prayers Lord! In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, I pray!

Amen.

DISEASE

The Lord forgives all your iniquities, He heals all your diseases.
Psalm 103:3

Loving Lord Jesus,

The Scripture says, "By His stripes, we are healed" and "whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." The Bible also says that You will strengthen the man who looks upon You on his bed of illness; You will sustain him on his sickbed.

When You lived on this earth, You went about doing good and healing all kinds of sickness and all kinds of disease among the people. You died and rose from the dead for our sins and that we may have eternal life. I believe with all my heart that You are present even today with all that miracle-working power and it is Your will that I should not perish. Lord, have mercy upon me and help me to overcome this disease. Let it be done for the glory of Your name. Forgive me all my sins that block Your blessings from reaching me. I know that You are going to heal me and I praise You for that.

Amen.

BEFORE SURGERY

Fear not, for I am with You; Be not dismayed, for I am Your God. I will strengthen You, Yes, I will help You, I will uphold You with My righteous right hand.
Isaiah 41:10

Heavenly Father!

You know my state! I am gripped by anxiety over the surgery I have to undergo! I am very much frightened of the outcome!

Master! Your word says that You will strengthen me on my bed of illness and that You will sustain me on my sickbed. Yes Lord! I trust Your word and turn to You for help. Human wisdom and skill are nothing before You. So, please fill the doctors who attend to me with Your divine wisdom Lord so that they can perform the surgery in a perfect manner. Take all those who assist them, in Your hands and keep them as Your instruments in bringing healing to me. I cling to Your promise that You are always with me, wherever I go! You never forget the cry of the humble. Lord! Hold my hand tightly and grant me Your peace so that I can undergo this surgery courageously. I know You will certainly do it because You are the one who perfects everything for me. I totally rest upon You and thank You for being with me. In Your precious name - I pray

Amen.

HOSPITALIZED

Jesus said to the man who was paralyzed, "I say to you, arise, take up your bed, and go to your house."
Luke 5:24.

Loving Lord Jesus,

I thank and praise You Lord, for all the good things that You have done in my life. Even in this moment of crisis Lord, I know that You are there to listen to my prayers and to answer them.

Lord Jesus, when You lived on this earth, You went around healing every sick person who came to You. Lord, I come to Your Throne of Grace to receive Your healing touch. Moreover, I believe that You will not put to shame those who trust in You. Father, Take away the pain and help me to arise from this sick bed. Everything is possible with You and I know that You will take care of me. Thank You Lord, for doing this. In the name of Jesus, I pray.

Amen.

DISABLED

Then great multitudes came to Him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others; and they laid them down at Jesus' feet, and He healed them.
Mathew 15:30

Heavenly Father!

You know the misery I am undergoing in my life because of this infirmity. I am so helpless and weary Lord! You are the Lord who calls those things that are not there as if they are there. Show Your mercy upon me Lord!

Master, when You were on this earth, You healed all those who came to You. I know that You are the living Lord with the same miracle working power. Hear my cry Lord! Touch me and make me whole! I believe in Your healing power because the Scripture says that there is healing under Your wings! I look up to You my Father, my Maker and Creator and I expect a miracle from Your mighty hands. I thank You in anticipation and offer this prayer in the most Holy name of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ!

Amen.

WRONG TREATMENT

"For I am the LORD, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob."
Malachi 3:6

Gracious Heavenly Father,

It is You and You alone to whom we look up for our daily needs. You are the Creator of Heaven and earth and our help comes from You. Our days are in Your hands and our steps are ordered by You, Father. All my thoughts and intentions are open before Your eyes. You know my sickness and agony more than anyone else. In fact, the doctor has wrongly diagnosed my sickness and by human error, given me a wrong treatment. Lord, You are my Healer and comforter Lord. You alone are able to break the effect of the wrong medicines and all wrong treatments. Let Your divine healing power enter my body right now and heal me from my sickness and save me from all the ill-effects caused due to this wrong treatment. Endow me with a new strength and health. I ask this prayer in the prayer-answering name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Amen.

Opinion poll for India's nuclear Deal with US

The deal is facing stiff opposition from Indias left parties, which don't want to see India sign the deal with USA.

One side, Mr Sing is dreaming for a bilateral relationship with Washington, The other side ,Mr Karat dreaming the deal as a nightmare

The US government believes that it is in the strategic interests of the United States for India to emerge as a major global power, and the administration has made it clear that it will do its best to help India achieve that goal.

Debate in the U.S.

Many in the U.S. looked at the deal negatively. Their main focus was the impact that the deal would have on other states that might be thinking of pursuing nuclear weapons. It was argued that this was a signal to such states that acquiring nuclear weapons could be a stepping stone to recognition as a major global player without any sanctions being imposed for such an acquisition.

Specifically, the issue of Pakistan was raised in so far as Pakistan might also demand the status given to India; as part of this argument, a refusal to Islamabad might mean growing anti-U.S. feelings in a state crucial for the success of Washington's war on terrorism.

LOGIN TO CAST YOUR VOTE IN THE OPINION POLL

1) http://jokesfromindianleft.blogspot.com/2006/07/ex-kairali-cpm-tv-channel-director.html

    * The Ernakulam Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Court (Economic Offences) on Wednesday framed charges against P. V. Abdul Wahab, Rajya Sabha member, and his relative, Fazal Rahman, in a case relating to import of a foreign car from Dubai by submitting false documents. The case was registered by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence. Mr. Wahab was the second accused in the case. The prosecution case was that the first accused Fazal Rahman had imported a Mercedes Benz car from Dubai in 1998. An agency was engaged for clearing the cargo. Meanwhile, the Intelligence Officer of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence was tipped off that documents produced for the import of the car were forged. The DRI intercepted the vehicle at the car complex of the Thiruvananthapuram airport.

    * Abdul Wahab owns substantial stakes in CPM owned TV Channel in Kerala. Interestingly he also have stakes in the Muslim League organ Chandrika daily and the Mujahid factions Varthamanam daily

    * P.V. Abdul Wahab was elected to the Rajya Sabha from Kerala in March on the Indian Union Muslim League ticket and had tactit support of CPM

    * Master of a Rs 136-crore business empire stretching from Malappuram to Australia as declared by Mr Wahab himself in his affidavit before the Election Commission

2) http://www.organiser.org/dynamic/modules.php?name=Content&pa=showpage&pid=165&page=6

The Nilambur unit of the CPM has a history of intra-party clashes. Three years back when NRI money-bag P.V. Abdul Wahab was nominated to the Rajya Sabha by Muslim League, local CPM Leader Padmakshan, challenged his nomination in the courts, on the ground that he was not a registered voter in India. Reports emultated that it was V.S. who instigated Padmakshan to file case against P.V. Abdul Wahab, since he was very close to Pinarayi Vijayan and Pinarayis trip to Singapore, Gulf etc. was financed by him. Incidently it was Abdul Wahabs link with Pinarayi, which slowed down the CPM agitation against Mulsim League Minister Kunjalikutty, in the infamous Ice-cream Parlour :-scandal.

3) http://www.grass-roots.in/cache/index.php/6581

Similarly he wants to attack several mafias in the state who are operating with the support of Pinarayi loyalists in the CPM. P.K. Kunjalikutty of the Muslim League who is involved in a : scandal is a close friend of Pinarayi Vijayan. Similarly Muslim League M.P., P.V. Abdul Wahab, a suspected front-man of Dawood Ibrahim and a leading businessman of Kerala is a close friend of Pinarayi and his trips abroad are financed by Abdul Wahab. Pinarayi had on the sly created an image that V.S. was anti-minority and he was prevented from campaigning in North Kerala due to the high concentration of Muslims there.

There is a big discussion going on about wastage dump at Tuticorin by some American company. Some people, particularly left centric, panicky ones started blaming US from day one saying the white imperialist tryign to dump their waste etc etc....

Let us see the reality. This is done by an American company registered under an Indian's name. This means and NRI in America did this for money. He might have bought the waste for recylcing or making a product out of it or thinking of making huge money. But he might have dropped the idea or something by using the corrupt politicians of our country.

So why blame America for this? or for everything.

If our government have the guts they should be sending this back to US and jail the culprit company. I am sure we will get help fromUS authorities.

What do you think?

Kerala now tangled in a coalition politics. May be the ones which is trapped the people very well in a very convincing way. People of Kerala collectively vote for each coalitions each 5 years no matter whether they are good or bad. Do they have any other choice? Apparently not, because these two coalitions cover everything possible and make sure nobody else can enter their space.

So when Communist regime comes we need to bear with all the garbage they carry and if UDF comes then we need to bear with all the garbage they carry. Literally the presence of political parties almost faded away from Kerala politics. These opportunistic coalitions is slowly becoming objective to it's development and progress.

UDF was blamed for corruption and n number of bad things and they voted out and brought in LDF, which is also going in the same direction. What if all Keralites decided to vote for only parties not coalitions?

Communalism is preading in the state widely and minority religions are purely vote banks and their corresponding parties making them victims of super conspiracy.
1000s of people died after an earthquake hit China's north-western region of Xinjiang on Monday morning.

CHONGQING, China - Chinese state media say 3,000 to 5,000 people have died in one county in Sichuan province alone from a massive earthquake.

The official Xinhua News Agency says another 10,000 people were believed hurt in Beichuan county in Monday's quake.

The epicenter of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake was in Sichuan, striking 57 miles northwest of the provincial capital of Chengdu at 2:28 p.m. local time.

The powerful earthquake struck central China on Monday, trapping nearly 900 students after their school collapsed, state media reported.

The 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit central China, but sent thousands of people rushing out of buildings and into the streets hundreds of miles away in Beijing and Shanghai. The temblor was felt as far away as Pakistan, Vietnam and Thailand.

The official Xinhua News Agency reported that four of the dead were ninth-grade students killed when their high school collapsed. Photos showed heavy cranes trying to remove rubble from the ruined school. Xinhua did not say how many of the students were feared dead.

It said its reporters in Juyuan township, about 60 miles from the epicenter, saw buried teenagers struggling to break loose from underneath the rubble of the three-story building "while others were crying out for help."

Two girls were quoted by Xinhua as saying they escaped because they had "run faster than others."

The earthquake comes less than three months before the start of the Beijing Summer Olympics, when China hopes to use to showcase its rise in the world.

The earthquake struck in the middle of the afternoon when classes and office towers were full, about 60 miles northwest of Chengdu. There were several smaller aftershocks, the U.S. Geological Survey said on its Web site.

Calls into the city did not go through as panicked residents quickly overloaded the telephone system. The quake affected telephone and power networks, and even state media appeared to have few details of the disaster.

"In Chengdu, mobile telecommunication convertors have experienced jams and thousands of servers were out of service," said Sha Yuejia, deputy chief executive officer of China Mobile.

Although it was difficult to telephone Chengdu, an Israeli student, Ronen Medzini, sent a text message to The Associated Press saying there were power and water outages there.

"Traffic jams, no running water, power outs, everyone sitting in the streets, patients evacuated from hospitals sitting outside and waiting," he said.

Xinhua said an underground water pipe ruptured near the city's southern railway station, flooding a main thoroughfare. Reporters saw buildings with cracks in their walls but no collapses, Xinhua said.

The earthquake also rattled buildings in Beijing, some 930 miles to the north, less than three months before the Chinese capital was expected to be full of hundreds of thousands of foreign visitors for the Summer Olympics.

Many Beijing office towers were evacuated, including the building housing the media offices for the organizers of the Olympics, which start in August.

"I've lived in Taipei and California and I've been through quakes before. This is the most I've ever felt," said James McGregor, a business consultant who was inside the LG Towers in Beijing's business district. "The floor was moving underneath me."

In Fuyang, 660 miles to the east, chandeliers in the lobby of the Buckingham Palace Hotel swayed. "We've never felt anything like this our whole lives," said a hotel employee surnamed Zhu.

Patients at the Fuyang People's No. 1 Hospital were evacuated. An hour after the quake, a half-dozen patients in blue-striped pajamas stood outside the hospital. One was laying on a hospital bed in the parking lot.

Skyscrapers in Shanghai swayed and most office occupants went rushing into the streets.

In the Taiwanese capital of Taipei, 100 miles off the southeastern Chinese coast, buildings swayed when the quake hit. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake was felt as far away as the Vietnamese capital of Hanoi, where some people hurried out of swaying office buildings and into the streets downtown. A building in the Thai capital of Bangkok also was evacuated after the quake was felt there.

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake is considered a major event, capable of causing widespread damage and injuries in populated areas.

The last serious earthquake in China was in 2003, when a 6.8-magnitude quake killed 268 people in Bachu county in the west of Xinjiang.

China's deadliest earthquake in modern history struck the northeastern city of Tangshan on July 28, 1976, killing 240,000 people.

Poor quality buildings

Xinjiang Seismology Bureau official Li Qianghua blamed the high death toll on the poor quality of buildings in the area.

The tremor was felt in the bureau's headquarters in the historic oasis city of Kashgar, about 150 km (100 miles) away from the epicentre.

The quake was also felt in Urumqi, more than 1,000 km (600 miles) to the north-east.

US Secretary of State Colin Powell, in China for talks on Iraq and North Korea, said: "I was sorry to learn... of the earthquake in western China and the loss of life.

"I want to express my regrets to the Chinese people."

History of quakes

Jiashi county, an area populated mostly by members of the Muslim Uighur minority, has suffered a number of powerful earthquakes in the past few years.

But the sparse population has meant that casualties have usually been low.

More than 20 people were killed in March 1996 when a quake of 6.9 magnitude hit an area 120 km (75 miles) north of Jiashi.

A further 12 people were killed in a quake in January 1997, and another nine died in a subsequent tremor in April of the same year.

Earthquakes in more populated regions have had a much higher death toll.

A quake measuring 7.9 shook Tangshan near China's capital Beijing in 1976, killing an estimated 250,000 people.

1. Lives are for living I live for you
Dreams are for dreaming I dream for you
Hearts are for beating mine beats for you
Angels are for keeping. Can I keep you?

2. You are like the sunshine so warm, you are like sugar, so sweet... you are like you... and that's the reason why I love you!

3. You must be a good runner because you are always running in my mind, you must be a good thief because you have stolen my heart, and i am always a bad shooter because I Miss You Always...

4. If I had a penny for everytime I thought of you, I'd still miss you, but at least I would be rich enough to come and see you..!!

5. If I die and go to heaven, I'll put your name on a golden star. So that all the angels can see, how much you mean to me.

6. I miss you so, here around me, so many people, but yet so alone. I miss your lips, your lovely smile, I miss you each day more and more!

7. Love is hard and will always be, but remember somebody loves you and that one is ME !

8. I wanted to send you all my love but the postman said it was too big !

9. If you live to be a hundred , I want to be a hundred minus one day , so I don't have to live a day without you.

10. There are a lot of birds wispering only about you, you should once listen to them, then you would know how much I love you.

11. When the night comes, look at the sky. If you see a falling star, don't wonder why, just make a wish. Trust me, it will come true, 'cause I did it and I found you!

12. I hope that you finally understand, that I will love you untill the end, because your not just my girl, you are also my best friend!

13. Kiss me and you will see stars ....Love me and I will give them to you.

14. My love, words however special ... could never even start, to tell you all the love I have for you within my heart!

15. The day that I'll die, when death replaces birth, I'll recognize angels' faces, 'cus I live with one on earth.

16. Loving you could take my life, but when I look into your eyes, I know you're worth that sacrafice!

17. If you were a tear I would never dare to cry. I might lose you!

18. If your heart was a prison, I would like to be sentenced for life.

19. If a big fat man creeps into your bedroom one night and stuffs you into a bag, Then do not worry 'cause I told Santa I wanted you for christmas!

20. If you are mad at me, you might just as well give me all my kisses back!

21. One day you will ask me: What is more important to you, me or your life? I will say: my life You will walk away from me without knowing that YOU ARE MY LIFE!

22. I have seen angels in the sky, I have seen snowfall in july, I have seen things u only imAgine to see, But I haven't seen anything sweeter than you.

23. True love is hard to find. Special 1-1 of a kind. But the love inside of me is true. It appeared the day I met you!

24. I believe that God above created you for me to love. He picked you out from all the rest cause He knew i'd love you the best!

25. If I died or went somewhere far, I'd write your name on every star so everyone could look up and see you mean the world to me.

26. I love you not because of who you are, but because of who I am when I am with you.

27. Who cares whether this is a poem or rhyme, I will love you until the end of time.

28. Last night I looked up at the stars and matched each one with a reason why I love you I was doing great, but then I ran out of stars.

29. If you live for 100 more days, then I want to live for 100 more days minus one so that I'd never have to live without you.

30. They say you only fall in love once, it can't be true. Everytime I look at you, I fall in love all over again.

31. I get the best feeling in the world when you say hi or even smile at me because I know, even if its just for a second, that I've crossed your mind.

32. Loved you yesterday, love you still, always have, always will.

33. If there ever comes a day when we can't be together, just know that you are in my heart. You'll be in there forever!

34. Do you believe in love at first sight? Or should I walk by again?

35. You can fall from the sky, you can fall from a tree, but the best way to fall is in love with me.

36. If I had a rose for everytime I thought about you Id be walking in a garden forever.

37. I wrote your name in the sand but the waves washed it away. I wrote your name on my hand but I washed it the next day. I wrote your name on a paper but I accidentally threw it away. I wrote your name in my heart and forever it will stay.

38. If I can only be with you in my dreams then I'll sleep for ever.

39. Sometimes the best things in life are worth waiting for. So wait for me, I'll be right back.

40. Why is it that I have to climb 1000 mountains to get to you and all you have to do is smile to get to me?

41. If I got a penny every time I thought of you I'd be a millionaire by tomorrow.

42. If you stood in front of a mirror and held up a dozen roses you would see the 13 most beautiful things in the world.

43. A day without you is like a day without light because you light up my life.

44. Is it true? Can it be? Are you the only one for me?

45. Tonight I ask the stars above. How I'll ever win your love. What do I do.What do I say. To turn your angel eyes my way?

46. The shortest word for me is "I"
The sweetest word for me is "love"
The only word for me is "you!"

47. The way you look into my eyes, It scares me
The way you say "I love you", It scares me
The way you know just what to say, It scares me
The ways you scare me, I love it

48. Good days come often, Bad days do too, But the best days only come when I'm with you.

49. You tripped me, so I fell for you.

50. I will love you until my heart stops beating.

51. If nothing lasts forever, will you be my nothing?

52. I wish I was your blanket, I wish I was your bed, I wish I was your pillow underneath your head, I want to be around you, I want to hold you tight, and be the lucky person who kisses you goodnight.

53. Each time I miss you a star falls from the sky, So if you look up at the night sky and find it dark with no stars, its all your fault, you made me miss you too much.

54. Words alone will never be able to express the depth of my love for you.
In case you didn't know, I'll be loving you always and forever!

55. Let these words not only touch your eyes, let them travel through your soul, and let them rest in your heart as you rest in mineI love you.

56. Falling in love with you was the easiest thing I've done in my life.

57. Hand in hand and heart to heart my love for you shall never part.

58. Loving you makes my heart explode with happiness.

59. Rains fall, winds blow, the sun shines... it all comes naturally, just like loving you.

60. Bfseing with you is like having every single one of my wishes come true.

61. Loving you has been the best thing to ever happen to me!

62. Just had to let you know... you're the best! I love you!

63. You are the sun in my day, the wind in my sky, the waves in my ocean, and the beat in my heart.

64. I wish I was there to hold you tight instead of just send this loving, "Good Night."

65. Thank you for being the one who calms all my inner fears.

66. Just when I thought it couldn't get better, you prove me wrong!
